Riggs Johnston
        Scout Camp
                at Elk River

Over the years, the camp passed through many owners’ hands before the present owner, Pacific Lumber Company, took over. The camp has been leased to the Boy Scouts since 1952.

One of our Council’s little-known jewels, Riggs Johnston Scout Camp (formerly known as Elk River Scout Camp) lies nestled in the redwoods near Eureka

Camp Riggs Johnston began life as a logging camp belonging to the Carson Lumber Company. Although the original camp was equipped with rail facilities, including an engine house and water tower, few of these relics remain. The present dining hall and kitchen were part of the original facility.

The Council maintains a resident caretaker at the camp. Plans are in the works to install a new water system and well, and eventually a shower facility. Because no drinking water or showers presently exist onsite, campers are required to bring their own drinking water.
