This important component of BSA's strategy to protect its members from child abuse.  Two adult leaders are required to have current Youth Protection Certification on file at the Scout Office for a tour permit to be approved.  Online Youth Protection training is available from this and other Council Web sites.  BSA empahsis fights child abuse by teaching youth the Three R's:  Recognize, Resist, and and Report child abuse; by helping parents and Scouters learn to recognize indicators of child abuse; and by teaching them how to handle child abuse situations.  To complete the Youth Protection Training online, click here or on the link above.

A two-hour course that examines the values, aims, history, funding, and methods of Scouting.  It emphasizes the age-appropriate content of each program, and how Scouting's values and methods work together.

This training prepares volunteers for their individual responsibilities:

Cub unit leaders and committee members can complete this training in one day or several evenings.  Segments are offered for Tiger Den Leaders, Cub Scout, Den Leaders, Webelos Den Leaders, Cubmasters, and Pack Coommittee Members.     Assistant leaders should take the training for the leader position for which they are assisting.

For Scoutmasters and Assistants, the first

This new training for is for all committee members to understand their roles and responsibilities and enable better support of the troop.

For all Advisors, assistants, crew committee members.

This 2-day outdoor course is recommended for leader or adult who will be camping with youth, including Webelos and Venturing units.

Basic Adult Leader Outdoor Orientation (BALOO) is training for Cub Scout leaders who will be giving leadership to a pack camping experience.  Leaders need not be experienced campers.  This training is intended to provide BSA guidelines for safety, basic equipment and activities that can be included to make a Pack campout safe and fun.  Cub Scout camping is a joint adult/youth activity and should be included as one of the summer-time pack activities.  Cub Scout packs submitting Tour Permits for camping activities MUST have a leader who is BALOO  trained.   BALOO training is valid for 2 years from the date of completion.  Click here on BALOO for more details.

OWL (outdoor leader skills for Webelos Leaders) is designed to help leaders learn how to provide a memorable experience for their webelos scouts, parents or guardians.  Webelos camping trips must be conducted under the leadership of a trained OWL leader.

Webelos Leader Outdoor Training (WLOT) presents 'how to' in planning and conducting successful Webelos Den parent and son overnight campouts and other Webelos outdoor activities. It reinforces - but does not duplicate what you learned at New Leader Essentials. This course provides hands-on learning experience in camping and outdoor skills as done by Webelos Dens.  This training also provides ideas on how to present the outdoor related Webelos Activity Badges, including Outdoorsman, Forester, Naturalist, Readyman, etc.

WLOT is designed for anyone wanting to learn about the Webelos Outdoor Program, including  Webelos Leaders and their Assistants, Bear Leaders preparing for the next year, Cubmasters, Pack Committee Members, and Parents. This is your opportunity to take part in an enjoyable outdoor learning experience and discover what the outing in Webelos Scouting is all about!

Additional ideas on running a Scouting unit are provided in these programs, which include Pow Wow and Roundtable training sessions.

Less focused on outdoor skills, the redesigned course strengthens volunteers' ability to work with and lead groups of youth and adults.  It is designed to give leaders the tools to understand how teams work; know what leadership style is appropriate to use in various situations; manage conflict; plan; communicate; and understand how to set a vision and make it come to life.

Wood Badge is offered in two 3-day weekends or in a weeklong course.  Click here on Wood Badge Info for details.
